Washing is not the hard part in this city. Drying is. From June the air holds so much water that clothes on a line indoors stay damp for two days and come out smelling of it, which is why a machine that spins hard enough to get most of the water out before anything reaches a line matters more here than the wash cycle does.
The alternative most people fall back on is the local dhobi, which works until the week you need something back on a particular day. A machine in the flat is the difference between planning around laundry and not thinking about it.
Buying one is the awkward part: it needs a plumber at both ends, it is heavy on an old staircase, and reselling a used washing machine when you leave takes a fortnight of haggling. We install it, service it, and take it out again when you are done.

6.5 kg covers one or two people. Take 7.5 kg for a flat of three or four, or if you wash bedding at home rather than sending it out.
Humidity is our problem too
