Kolkata walks. The morning crowd at Rabindra Sarobar, the circuits of Central Park in Salt Lake, the pavements around Maidan — this is a city with a genuine daily walking habit, and then four months a year when the rain and the humidity make it impossible to keep.

That is a seasonal problem, and a walking pad or an exercise bike is a seasonal answer. Renting one for the monsoon is a straightforward proposition; buying a treadmill you will use from June to September and then store somewhere in a two-bedroom flat in Ballygunge is not.

There is also the staircase. Much of the housing here predates lifts, and a boxed treadmill does not turn the half-landing in an older north Kolkata building. Getting it up there is our job, not yours — and so is getting it back down when you are done.
